I can’t believe Im typing this but I have been photographing weddings at Farmington Gardens for over 10 years! Its kind of my second home wedding venue �� The Chabot family has been fantastic to work with all these years as well as Courtney, Ashley and all the staff. I always look forward to great meals, sunsets in the field with my couples and a packed dance floor! Combine that with my studio being only 10 minutes down the road and you have one happy photographer. If you are a Farmington Gardens couple please reach out! This was a labor of love. It took me 2 months to cull through nearly every wedding I photographed at The Riverview in Simsbury CT. My first wedding there was Molly and Patricks on 11/25/11! I can without doubt say I know every inch of this photogenic property �� A big thank you to all the couples who have hired me over the years to photograph their wedding at The Riverview. I put together this yearly blog post at the end of every season and it never gets old.

I smile big as I cull through the last year and grab some of my favorites. I can’t stress enough how hard it is to get down to the images below….there is yelling, looking up at the sky with hands raised and plenty of conversation with myself as I justify what to keep and what to cut. So behold some of my favorites from this last year. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I did making them.

Styled Wilderness Shoot!

I’ve always shied away from styled shoots as they can be misleading to potential clients. While it does portray a photographers style it in no way is a fair representation of the work a photographer can produce under pressure, with limited time, in variable lighting conditions on a wedding day. I have real weddings to edit anyways ��

However, I’m so happy that the stars aligned and we got to do this mini style shoot last October. On wedding days you can’t drag a bride and groom anywhere you please to make images…..I try �� But keeping them clean and intact is kinda important! Enter the guerrilla roving styled shoot. Just me, a bride and groom, a car and the afternoon. We drove from Canton to Colebrook stopping anywhere we fancied to shoot during peak foliage….photographers dream!

The biggest thanks to Christine, owner of The Harwinton Florist. I have the pleasure of photographing her work at weddings throughout Connecticut every year…always excited to see what she comes up with. Muchas Gracias!

Also, thank you to one of my second shooters Ashley and her fiancee Doug. These two climbed boulders, perched on rocks in rivers and hiked game trails all afternoon with me. Troopers!

Welcome to the about me section. I’m Luke Wayne, owner and lead photographer of Luke Wayne Photography. Photographing couple’s most important life events has been my career since I left the West Coast in 2010. My studio is in a historic commercial building in Collinsville, Connecticut. I’m published, rated with both Wedding Wire and Knot and a member of the Connecticut Professional Photographers Association

I work, you play!

My mission is very simple—take beautiful photos while my clients enjoy their day. On the surface my job is pretty simple-I take pictures. But as the saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words. Your wedding day will be filled with wonderful moments and powerful feelings. I am passionate about making sure they are forever.

At the end of my work day, we have a product—a wonderful photographic record. But we also had an experience. We created something artful along the way and together we found your wedding story.

I’m always part of the action. We meet long before the wedding day. We spend time learning about each other. You learn a bit about my eye, my focus, what I think is important. And I come to see who you are, what you value. We plan together so our visions align and we have confidence in each other. Then you have the time of your life while I go to work.

Flow

No two clients are the same

My process is organic. Planning is always important but great pictures are often born in the moment. I may find or make beautiful light to put you in. Pose you a bit. Or let everything happen spontaneously. Either way I capture it all and the result is something relaxed and genuine.

Light

My guiding……

Light motivates me to make something beautiful. I follow the shine, the shadows and softness that is offered in order to create something authentic. A great photo has deliberate composition, honest emotion and above all a light that complements the scene. The fleeting glow suggests mood, sculpts scenes, draws the eye and adds drama. I am always moving after or before the light, working to create.

My Studio at 51 Bridge Street Collinsville, Connecticut

I bought 51 Bridge Street in 2014. I love this building. It was built on a perch over the Farmington River in the late 1800s. I started renovating a few years ago; thought I would never finish. It has the original quarter sawn floors. Old doors. The locks and knobs are from that long ago era as are the 1800 century architectural lines. My studio space is on the first floor where I meet clients for the first time and begin lifelong relationships.

Myself, Jacob and Dana met early in the morning at Harkness Memorial State Park for their engagement session. The park was deserted and we had total freedom to make beautiful pictures and get to know each other a bit. These two are making me wait until 2018 to shoot their wedding! So inconsiderate Starting the day creatively with a smiling couple at a beautiful location was a joy…cant wait for the big day!

My 2015 In Photographs

When I started photographing weddings I did a lot of second shooting mostly for one company in Hartford. This studio treated me very well, taught me a lot and pretty much gave me my start. However, the most important lesson they instilled was to constantly improve. Always push the boundaries of the camera and yourself. This to me at the time was no problem. Because I was starting out and had so much improving to do, finding the next level came pretty easily. Naturally. Fast forward 5 years and I can now truly appreciate the drive, patience and skill a seasoned photographer must possess to work by this mantra.

I know I’m not the best salesman. I don’t have the strongest social media presence or the most innovative marketing strategy. Knowing this you might be quick to conclude that I’m not able to be a full time photographer. But I am blessed to do this for a living and make a comfortable income. Why? Its because of the motivation to improve, to push the limits of my comfort zone and the camera to create stunning images for my clients. It’s because of the one hallmark lesson I learned early on.

Below are 152 images of my 2015 year. These are 152 of my favorite photographs, not necessarily the best, just the ones that really grabbed me in the chest today. Culling this blog post has allowed me to reflect not only on my past year of work but on each and every one of my couples. I imagine them clinking champagne on New Years, planning their belated honeymoons and maybe even finding out they are going to be parents. Their lives continue without me. But I take solace in the fact that I was there on one of the most important days in their lives. They trusted me and I gave them everything I had.

This wedding was a long time in the making for me. Jessica and Scott first reached out to me roughly 3 years ago. We later photographed their hiking engagement session some 2 years ago and finally their wedding this past October!! I could not be more pleased with the results. Jessica and Scotts thoughtful and detailed planning really paid off. So many DIY touches . This is the first opportunity I’ve had to photograph at The Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport New York. What a great location!!

I would like to remind all future brides that I absolutely travel for events. I adore going somewhere out of my home turf in Connecticut and am open to just about any destination. So don’t bet shy

For me the best part of this amazing wedding was stepping outside for a few portraits of Austin and Kelsey at dusk. It had rained all day and finally let up just in the nick of time to grab some romantic images outside. Photographing couples has become therapeutic for me. I no longer stress about time, light or other peoples opinions. Austin and Kelsey’s evening photo session was no different. We moved in and out of the willow trees while the sky darkened and quietly and calmly made some beautiful images. I live for moments like that and I can’t thank the two of them enough for allowing me the pleasure of their company.

I T-Boned a Porsche on the way to Jonathan and Caitlin’s wedding. So that’s how my day started �� After the police officer absolved me of any wrong doing–the guy just cut in front of me–I was on my way to photograph an amazing wedding with a banged up car. The day could only get better right?

Right! This was a stunning wedding that just kept offering amazing moments. Caitlin’s prep was emotional and beautiful, the ceremony was full of smiles, the cake cutting was hilarious, and the party….ohhh man…these guys got down! Photographer overload!

Thank you Jonathan and Caitlin for having me along on your wedding day. Your friends and family made me feel so welcome and appreciated. It was a joy to watch your families come together to celebrate your love.

There is so much to say about this wedding but I think this just about sums it up �� At around 9 pm a huge rain storm hit. Naturally I asked Pat and Nicole if I could photograph them in the rain. Everyone warned me off. Friends, family, even some of the event staff–they all said “Don’t do this Luke!”….Nicole, on the other hand, looked at me with steely eyes and said “Let’s go for it!”….as it turns out we made some fun images that put a wonderful exclamation mark on a great day. So enjoy…count the genuine smiles in this bog post. I dare ya!

When I published Ben and Jills congratulatory post on Facebook I said that this wedding changed my life…..and its true. These two, their families and friends were an absolute pleasure and I will never forget the fun I had creating images of this wedding. Its also worth mentioning that I have had a noticeable influx of couples hiring me from San Diego to shoot their wedding here in CT. I enjoy this trend mostly because I need people in my life to talk about the awesomeness of In-N-Out Burger �� Oh how I miss you…..mmmmmmmm.

Margot is my cousin. She lives in upstate New York and I probably don’t see her and her family enough. So when she asked me to photograph her wedding I jumped at the opportunity. Working this event not only allowed me to do what I love in an amazing setting but also provided the opportunity to connect with Margot and her folks. At the end of the day I left with what I knew were stellar images. But equally important was the revived connection with a side of the family I now resolve to spend more time with.

Jon and Erin’s Collinsville Riverview Wedding

Jon (the groom here) used to beat me up a little during gym class in 8th grade. No joke….he was a year older and scared me a little. Who would have thought I would be photographing his wedding day. Funny how life works out. Great way to start Luke…..anyways….. Jon and Erin planned a very photogenic day for their June wedding. I truly appreciate it when a couple puts thought into locations, timing and details. It makes all the difference in the world to this photographer. They were married at Collinsville Congregational Church (really nice church), then we met at Folly Farm for photos and finally converged on The Riverview for the reception.

A Couples Year In Review

Matt and Stephanie's wedding I will always remember by their first look. It was perfect �� After that I knew the rest of the day was going to be gravy. The newlyweds requested a sparkler shot in the evening and of course I obliged. Ashley has a very interesting video of me running around the resorts grounds huffing and puffing with sparkler in hand. Is this really my job? Someone pinch me! My 2014 season has been a whirlwind so far. Greil and Jen’s big day only reaffirmed this. To begin they chose the Hartford City Hall for their ceremony. What a stunning and original location for this part of the wedding. We photographed formals there as well with a quick stop over to Bushnell Park. The official party/reception was at The Bond Ballroom…I say official because I unfortunately had to leave before the Bond set this bunch loose on Hartford later that night ��

I have not blogged an engagement in a looooong time. Jonathan and Caitlin were kind enough to invite me on a hike for their engagement session. I have always wanted to photograph a couple around Heublein Tower so needless to say I was game.

These two are so great together….they smile every time they look at each other in turn making my job pretty easy �� So thanks Jonathan and Caitlin for the hike…..your big day cant come soon enough!

While editing Ken and Dana’s wedding I found myself grinning. I was smitten over these absolutely beautiful little moments that occurred and I was lucky enough to capture. Every wedding I shoot offers something special for me photographically. This wedding yielded the most tender, fleeting moments I have ever come across. Everyone let their guard down and came together perfectly to celebrate the vows Ken and Dana took for each other.

It is also worth mentioning that this is one of the rare weddings I photographed without a second shooter/assistant. I think the lack of a big photographic presence and the opportunity for me to slow down and just connect with the moments resulted in something very special.

A Winter Simsbury Riverview Wedding

I absolutely adored this wedding. Great couple, rockin party, fun friends/family and the first snow of the winter!! The perfect way to cap off a successful 2014.

Mike and Lindsey were married last November at The Riverview in Simsbury Connecticut. We jumped over to the Hartford City Hall for the first look, group shots and creative portraits. Then back to Simsbury for the wedding! Things went off without a hitch.

A Marine Corps Wedding, Amarante’s New Haven

When I first met with Jenelle she was looking for a photographer who could handle her friends. I get this a lot. Apparently people think I am a fun photographer to work with…I believe they are right. However, I had no idea what I was walking into with this one. I used to live in San Diego right next to a Marine base (Camp Pendleton) and I became friends with many Navy Seals down in Coronado….so I got this right? I can hang with these guys and still deliver some outstanding images. By midday we were strutting along the waters edge of New Haven in Storm Trooper masks. Onlookers were terrified! The good times never let up, Ed and Jenelle’s wedding story below is a testament to that.

This wedding truly tested my skills as a photographer. I am very pleased with the end result and look forward to similar awesome weddings in the future.

The October River Session

Sophia and I had been playing around with the idea of a river shoot since early summer. Busy work schedules and the rigors of my wedding season made finding time to make personal images tough. Sophia gave me the kick I needed early in October and we made it happen during the last 30 minutes of daylight. Can you say trooper?

Anyways this was cool. My first personal shoot since last winter…glad to finally have edited it out…enjoy. And maybe leave comments? No one leaves comments…..

Upon arrival to shoot Amanda’s prep I was given a little guidance concerning how she would like her day captured. Amanda asked me to just do my thing, get creative, be different and have fun with it. Oh, ok…I can handle that This was a breath of fresh air. Instead of an overbearing mother of the bride or Pinterest dictating my artistic directing I was given complete freedom. The results speak for themselves. An Exploratory Engagement

Why do bad things happen to great people? I don’t know. But I do know that Billy and Ashley are wonderful, caring people who lost their reception site late in the wedding calendar. Everyone was crushed by the news except the bride and groom—they took the setback in stride, and found a new location at the Aquaturf. They were back on track in short order. Whew!

In the end they had a glorious sunny day and a great venue. Billy and Ashley were surrounded by warm friends and a loving family. I guess the old saying “rough rehearsal, great show “has some truth to it!

All weddings are unique and it is my job to make sure that what is original and personal about every wedding is well documented. When a couple brings unusual talents to their wedding day, they can create something rare. Lisa and David did that. Lisa is a professional dancer and if David isn’t, then he should be—the guy can move! The entire day was a fantastic dance recital. David and Lisa’s first dance was amazing and both father- daughter and mother-son dances were a sight to be seen. The dance floor throughout the night was off the charts!

Adding to the wonderment, Lisa, David and all their friends wanted the most zany and unusual pictures you can imagine. We climbed clock Towers, enacted murder scenes (two times) and walked barefoot through the city.

This was a wedding of two creative and talented people. My hats off to you both, your wonderful family, and your unique friends.
